Were you the victim of a money wire scam? Scammers used Western Union to receive payment for promised prizes, loans, jobs, discounted products or other financial rewards that were then never given. This year, Western Union admitted to aiding and abetting wire fraud and agreed to pay a $586 million settlement because of a joint investigation into these fraudulent practices by the Federal Trade Commission, a government agency, the Department of Justice, and the United States Postal Service.

LawNY’s Community Development and Economic Justice Project
Since Legal Assistance of Western New York (“LawNY”) launched its Community Development & Economic Justice Project (“CDP”) in 2016, CDP staff have adopted a model of “community lawyering,” embracing the notion that community groups and nonprofit organizations possess deep connections with the communities they serve and can help legal services organizations pinpoint the services our communities most desperately need.
Medicaid is a state and federally funded Public Health Insurance Program, that provides health insurance for individuals who meet income guidelines. Expanded income guidelines are available to individuals over the age of 65, and those under 65 who are certified disabled.
Individuals who are over the age of 65, or certified disabled may be "over-income" for traditional Medicaid, and pay a "spend-down" in order to qualify for Medicaid on an ongoing basis. This coverage can be retroactive for up to 3 months prior to the date of the application.
Beginning May 1, 2018, we will see a major change related to appeals and fair hearing rights affecting Medicaid Managed Care enrollees. To dispute a plan’s adverse determination (ie. denials, reductions, or inadequacy), enrollees must "exhaust" the plan’s internal appeal process BEFORE requesting a fair hearing. 42 C.F.R. 438.402(c)
