FLLC Summer Internship- Rochester




Legal Assistance of Western New York, Inc.® (LawNY) is a not-for-profit law firm providing free legal services to eligible clients in civil cases through 7 regional offices covering a 14-county area in Western New York State. LawNY receives funding from the Legal Services Corporation, New York State Office of Court Administration, Interest on Lawyer Accounts (IOLA) Fund of the State of New York, United Way, AmeriCorps, Equal Justice Works, and numerous municipalities, foundations and donors. Our workforce includes approximately 145 attorneys, paralegals and support staff.


It is LawNY’s mission to increase access to justice through excellent legal representation, advocacy and service. LawNY seeks to address systemic inequalities and injustices and foster racial, social and economic justice.



The Pro Bono Team engages law students with a desire to assist in expanding the delivery of legal services to our communities and provides an opportunity to complete the 50-hour requirement for admission to the New York State Bar. Internship duties may include but are not limited to: providing screening and intake for low-income persons seeking civil legal assistance; assisting staff attorneys in providing legal services to clients; working with community agencies serving low-income populations to strengthen collaborations; providing outreach and community education for targeted groups; and participating in special projects. Interns and volunteers receive in-depth training and ongoing support and supervision.


We are currently seeking law students for Summer 2020 internships in our Rochester office to provide assistance with our FingerLakes Legal Care program. The position is located in our Rochester office. Normal office hours are 9:00AM-5:00PM M-F. We suggest a commitment of 30 hours/week over 6 weeks.


Finger Lakes Legal Care is a project located in our Rochester office that uses the medical-legal partnership (MLP) model. MLP allow legal services integrated into treatment delivery with a goal to improve health and well-being for vulnerable populations by meeting legal needs. LawNY’s FLLC program embeds attorneys at Rochester General Hospital, Alexander Park, and Reidman Campus, and receive referrals from any participating health system. Our program is a New York Department of Health designated Health-Related Legal Services Program and an Attested Partner with DSRIP in the Finger Lakes Performing Provider System. The project includes on-site intakes and consultations, training for healthcare staff, providing legal information materials and providing advice and representation to individual patient-clients in a plethora of legal matters.



Applicants must be law students or recent law school graduates. Applicants also must have excellent advocacy and writing skills, and must be able to communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
