Supervising Attorney - Ithaca



The Ithaca office of Legal Assistance of Western New York, Inc.® has an immediate opening for a Supervising Attorney. This is a Supervisory and General Practice position, emphasizing Housing and Benefits, but including the full range of general practice matters handled by the program at the Administrative, Trial Court and Appellate levels. Duties will include supervision and training of staff attorneys, staff paralegals, AmeriCorps members, interns and volunteers as well as maintaining a limited caseload, including representation of eligible clients in various civil matters including Landlord/Tenant, Real Property/Foreclosure, Medicaid/Health Care, SSI/Social Security, Welfare, Unemployment Insurance Benefits and other matters within program priorities. The Supervising Attorney is expected to develop specialized knowledge in one or more substantive areas of poverty law. Substantial involvement with the Courts, administrative tribunals and the private bar are expected.

The Supervising Attorney will collaborate with other human services providers, non-profit organizations and community, client or other advocacy groups to address problems of the poor, including providing community legal education.


Program: Legal Assistance of Western New York, Inc. ® is a not-for-profit law firm which provides civil legal services to low-income clients in a fourteen county area of western New York including the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier region. The Ithaca office directly serves residents of Tompkins and Tioga Counties. Program staff includes attorneys and paralegals who work across areas of specialization to bring a holistic approach to addressing issues affecting our clients and communities. LawNY® focuses on meeting the legal needs of individual clients, as well as addressing systemic problems that create barriers for clients living in poverty.


Requirements: Admission to the New York State Bar is required with at least three years of practice experience. Experience with the Courts and agencies in Tompkins and Tioga Counties is an advantage but not required. Applicants must have excellent legal advocacy and writing skills and must be able to communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Most importantly, applicants should demonstrate a strong commitment to helping poor and disadvantaged people.


Salary: Salary is dependent on experience and based on a pay scale with annual increments. Beginning salary for a Supervising Attorney with three years of legal services experience is $53,100 as per the LawNY® salary scale. We also provide an excellent package of fringe benefits including health, disability, and life insurance as well as generous leave provisions.
