Pro Bono Assistance Project (PBAP)

The Pro Bono Assistance Project (PBAP) is a panel of law student volunteers who will assist attorneys who are working on pro bono cases assigned through Volunteer Legal Services Project and Finger Lakes Volunteer Legal Services. Volunteers will perform research and writing, communicate with clients, collect information from various sources and other tasks assigned by the attorney. PBAP is limited to 2L and 3L students.

Students gain practical experience, are exposed to various areas of the law, gain the satisfaction of helping to provide access to the legal system to those who might not otherwise have that opportunity, and learn the importance of pro bono work while they are still in law school.  They can also benefit by a mentoring relationship that they may develop with the attorney. Participation in PBAP is ideal for those students who are looking to make contacts with private attorneys in the community.

Students may be required to come to the attorney's office on set dates or they may work independently with scheduled updates. Individual attorney-student collaboration may differ depending on the preferences of both parties. While student participation is on a semester basis, many pro bono cases will continue on after the end of the semester. Students are encouraged to make arrangements with their attorney to continue working on the pro bono case beyond their initial semester commitment.
