Overview of security deposit issues for tenants in upstate New York.

A security deposit is money that you pay to your landlord. Your landlord holds this money until you move out. If you damage the property, or do not pay rent, the landlord can keep the money. If, when you move out, there is no damage and you don’t owe your landlord any rent, you should get the security deposit back.
Some landlords don't give back security deposits and make up fake damage claims.  You may have to sue your landlord in Small Claims Court to get your security deposit back.
